Mrs. Barbara Kathleen Campbell Bates, 57, of Hunter Street, Summerville, crossed over to be with her Lord on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, following a three year battle with breast cancer. Mrs. Bates passed away at her home surrounded by those she loved the most.

A native of Trion, Georgia, she was born to the late Paul M. and Bertha Parker Campbell on October 10, 1952. Mrs. Bates was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church, secretary for Black & Meek Milling Company, and besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband the late Ed Bates.

Immediate survivors are her son Chance and daughter Alecia, both of Summerville, very special step-daughter and primary caregiver, Deborah Bates Terry of Chatsworth; sister Nancy Lang of LaFayette, brothers William Campbell of Chickamauga, Glenn Campbell of Trion, and Harlan Campbell of San Diego, CA., and four nieces. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Kathryn Padgett, Lorine Arnold, and Inez Blackmon, all of Summerville, and other step-children.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Dec. 10, and Mrs. Bates was laid to rest at Wesley's Chapel Cemetery near her beloved parents on Friday December 11th. Services were conducted from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Active Pallbearers were Charles Black, Randle Selman, Joe Reed, Kenneth Moore, Neal Black, and B. J. Gamble.

Barbara was married to my uncle, but as often happens in families, she felt more kin than he did, and I got to know her better, and was honored to help take care of her, even just the little bit I did, in her last months. Everybody who knew Barbara knew she loved to cook, made the best pepper relish in the world, and knew that she found a lot of pleasure in her last months in watching Paula Deen.

Barbara was a fighter, she never saw her diagnosis as a death sentence, and she fought to win until she drew her last breath. She will always be loved and missed by everyone who knew her, and I know she's watching over us all.

When she called my cell, I had a special ringback tone for her, and she loved it. When we had to call the ambulance after she had an episode (after which they found the brain tumor), she called my cell three times, waiting for the ambulance, she said she just wanted to hear the song. Here are the words, just for you Barbara.

Hank Williams - I Saw The Light

I wandered so aimless life filed with sin
I wouldn't let my dear savior in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
no more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
no more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I was a fool to wander and astray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
no more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
