William Pulaski Burks was a brother of my great-grandfather, Mastin Milton Burks, who went to Tyler, Smith Co., Texas from China Grove, Pik Co., Alabama. They were the sons of John "Brinkley" Burks and 1. Temperence "Tempy" Evans. William Pulaski Burks married 1. Minerva A. V. "Nan" Braswell on Jan. 23, 1855 in China Grove, Pike Co., Alabama. Their children were George B., Robert E., and William O. Burks. William married 2. Louise Ledbetter. He was a merchant in Montgomery, Alabama in the mid-1800s; he owned the large Burks Grocery. William was a close personal friend and possible relative of President Jefferson Davis and was a pallbearer at his funeral. He served with Company E 33rd Alabama Inf. CSA

"Born near Atlanta in 1834 he moved as a very young boy to Pike Co., Alabama. During the Civil War, he served as a private in the 22nd Alabama Infantry, fighting at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Following the war he located at Montgomery, AL, then moved to Chattanooga, where he became manager of the Mutual Loan and Insurance Company. Although a much younger man, Burks became a close personal friend of Jefferson Davis and was an honorary pallbearer at the latter's funeral. He died Feb. 25, 1905 in Chattanooga and was buried in Montgomery. His wife's maiden name was Ledbetter. [Chattanooga Times, Feb. 26, 1905.]"
