Born in Maryland, Benjamin moved to Virginia about 1809 and married Agnes Flint. He fought in the War of 1812, in the 7th regiment, with Gray's Virginia Militia. After 1812, he moved to Kentucky, and finally settled in Illinois about 1813. He purchased several thousand acres in Morgan County. He and Agnes had 15 children.
