DEKALB, Ill. — Mr. Lowell C. Babcock, 81, of DeKalb, and formerly of Morris, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2010, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb with his loving family by his side.
Born Aug. 9, 1928, in Morris, Lowell was the son of LaVerne and Geraldine (Murray) Broderick. He was educated in Mazon schools and graduated from Mazon High School with the class of 1946. As a young man, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Mazon Boy Scouts.
Lowell married Darva Jean Oswood on Oct. 6, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during the Korean conflict. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
Lowell was employed with the Morris Paper Mill for 22 years, Georgia-Pacific in Aurora for five years, Custom Packaging in Hampshire, Ill., for eight years and with Hintzche Agricultural Products in Maple Park, Ill., for 16 years.
He was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He was a fan of Indy racing and NASCAR.
Lowell was a member of John Martin Steele Post 6049 V.F.W. in Morris. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post in DeKalb.
Survivors include his loving wife of more than 58 years, Darva Jean of DeKalb; one daughter, Deborah "Debbie" (Jim) Gross of Hampshire, Ill.; three grandchildren, Shelley (Dave) Kress of Las Vegas, Brian Gross of Lake Bluff, Ill., and Tyler Gross of Hampshire; two sisters, Betty Williams of Mazon and Norma (Duane) Engelhardt of Springfield, N.J.; two brothers, Max (Donna) and Verne (Lorraine) Babcock, both of Morris; and several nieces and nephews.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Gwen Newport and Patricia Plett.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of memorial services at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at U.C. Davis & Sons Funeral Home Ltd., 301 W. Washington St., Morris. Memorial services will be held at the funeral home with Rev. Scott McClellan officiating.
Per his wishes, cremation rites were accorded.
