Mr. Altemus died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where he had been a patient since Sunday. He had been ill since August 1996.
He was born Aug. 18, 1946, in Paterson NJ, and was a son of Elizabeth Meyers Altemus of Hawthorne, NJ and the late John J. Altemus I.
He served in the Air Force in Vietnam and earned his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's Seminary in Kentucky. He moved to the area 21 years ago from Alexandria and was a regional director for the Virginia State Employment Commission. Mr. Altemus was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
On Aug. 28, 1971, he married the former Jane Mullen, who survives. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a son, Jesse Altemus, Fulks Run; and a brother, David Altemus, Fair Lawn, NJ.
The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, in care of food pantry manager, Ron Coon, 154 N. Main St., Harrisonburg VA 22802.
Arrangements are by the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
