John Giles was born in Canada on February 26, 1842, being almost 77 years old at the time of his death. He was married to Sarah Wilson at Hagersville, Ont., December 3, 1863. Ten children were born of this union - nine girls and one boy, the boy and one daughter dying in infancy. Eight of the daughters survive him, and all were with him at the last except Mrs. Maggie Teary (sic) of Tacoma, Wash.
He came to Michigan in 1870, and to Central Lake about twenty-five years ago [note: about 1891], having resided here since that time until the death of his wife, which occurred six years ago. Since that time he has lived at the homes of his parents. He spent most of his winters with his daughters in southern Michigan, but was always in Central Lake during the summer months. When a young man he was converted to the church, and has always been an avowed and devout Christian. With his wife he united with the M. E. church of this place, and has always taken an active part in church work. He loved church work and when possible never missed a church service. He always lived a beautiful and peaceful life, trusting in God's goodness.
