Edward "Ed" Wettin, 84, a 29 year Wenatchee resident, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, October 11, 2010. Ed was born in Des Plaines, IL. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. After a long courtship with Pat, who was the 'girl next door', Ed and Pat married in 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Chicago, IL. They had four children, all born in Illinois. They moved their family to Anchorage, AK in 1959, the year Alaska became the 49th State, where he was known to his friends as "Big Ed." Ed was an Electrician for the Civil Engineers on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. Prior to retirement, he also opened his own electric, plumbing and building maintenance business. After retiring, Ed and Pat moved to Wenatchee in 1981. He and his wife were active Catholic volunteers for over 40 years, working with engaged couples, starting in 1960 with Pre Cana, then as first coordinators of Engaged Encounter in Anchorage. Their work with Engaged Encounter continued in the Diocese of Yakima. Ed was active at St. Joseph's Parish in Wenatchee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He served as an Acolyte and Eucharistic Minister and was always there to greet church parishioners with a hearty hug.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Pat; three children, Pat Murakami (son-in-law, Shiro), Paula Harris and John Wettin (daughter-in-law, Tammy); and four grandchildren, Paul Wettin, Casandra Harris, Stephanie Wettin and Ryk Murakami. Ed was preceded in death by his infant son, Edward Anthony; his parents, Fritz and Frances Wettin; as well as his three brothers and one sister, Fritz Jr., Johnny, Walter and Doralies.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Greg Morper and his nurse, Tish Caton; Central Washington Hospice and their caring staff; and Fr. Tom Kuykendall, Fr. Roy Gutierrez and Deacon Bill Osborn of St. Joseph's Parish.
