Rev. War papers of Gabriel Hutchings It says:

"My family consists of myself and my wife ____ ___ well advanced in years is not only very infirm but has lost the use of her right hand and arm my occupation is that of a shoemaker but I am so very infirm that I am not able to follow the trade I have debts due to me to the amount of about forty dollars and I am owing over and above the price of the horse creature above mentioned about the amount of one hundred and eighty dollars"

Fayette Co., Indiana Court Order Book B, pg 62 Lydia Hutchings, the widow of Gabriel Hutchings brought into court pension Certificate #17045 issued to her husband for her (his) service in the Revolutionary War. The entry stated that Gabriel was inscribed on the pension list of the Ohio Agency at the rate of $8.00 per month. Henry Hinkle and Samuel Hutchings testified as to Lydia's relationship with Gabriel. 11/21/1831.

Sheila Anastas: a book source at the Valley Forge gift shop lists him in the 4th NJ Brigade as a private under Capt. Alexander Mitchell, Brigade leader William Maxwell. The 4th NJ Brigade unit was made up of militiamen, and supplied support. Their encampment at Valley Forge was the nearest to George Washington's Marquee tent. Gabriel was listed as fit for duty on 4/1778; sick, absent 5/778; and fit for duty 6/1778. He originally enlisted at Morristown, NJ and fought at the defense of Philadelphia at the Battle of Monmouth.
