Sylers Woodburn Looker, seventh son of Edmond Burke and Martha Russell Looker, was born May 10, 1847 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and passed from this life November 19, 1920 at his home in the village of Viola, aged 73 years, 6 months and 19 days.
At the age of four Mr. Looker, with his parents, moved to Fulton County, Ohio where he grew to manhood.
In the year 1864 he twice enlisted in the service of his country, but was not permitted to go because of his age.
In 1868 he made a trip to Kansas, but not being favorably impressed with conditions there, he returned to Indiana where he worked on a farm until winter and then went to the lumber camps of Michigan where he worked until the spring of 1870. He then moved to Richland County, Wisconsin where he cleared a farm and built a home.
He was married to Sarah Adeline Carter November 26, 1874. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. Ruannah Snyder of Rexford, Montana; Mrs. Amelia Carruthers of Withee, Wisconsin, Melvern Dennis, Mrs. Lorena Cupp and Roscoe Clark, all of Viola; Mrs. Lottie Ekleberry of Boscobel, Wis., and Mrs. Lillie Shepherd of Eastman, Wis.
The loving mother was called from earth Oct. 20, 1888, leaving the husband and seven small children.
July 4, 1889 he was married to Adella Outland who passed away Oct. 7, 1902. To this union were born three children: Edmond Burke of Viola, Arthur Ray of Madison, and Mrs. Edith Johnson of LaFarge, all of whom survive.
After the death of the wife and mother the home was for a time broken up until Oct. 5, 1905 when he was married to Mary Elizabeth Stockdale who has since made a pleasant home for him the children, even being mindful of his comfort and so devotedly filling the place left vacant by the loss of our mother.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, ten children and thirty-two grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a kind loving husband and father and a good neighbor, always upright in his dealing with his fellow men.
In 1910 he united with the Christian church and has since been active in work of the church and a living example of his faith in him who maketh all men brothers.
There will be a short service at the home at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, December 2, Rev. Applegate officiating, after which there will be a service at the church at Pleasant Ridge at 1:00 p.m. and interment made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. A.C. Jett having charge of this service.
