John was born in the tiny community of Riceville, Ontario. He first married Margaret Ellen Cameron from Roxborough Township, Stormont County, Ontario and moved to Duluth about 1888. Margaret died in 1902. John next married Isabella Walker in 1903. They farmed for about 10 years in Aitkin County and then moved back to Duluth about 1930.
