Obituary Tuscola County Advertiser, Caro, MI. May 12, 1916:
"Cornelius Conant-Old resident of county, Thirty-four years in Columbia and father of large family. Cornelius Conant died late Friday evening, May 5, as a result of heart trouble and a disease of the nerves. He had been in poor health for over a year but was confined to bed only six weeks.
For 34 years Mr. Conant has been a resident of Columbia Twp. living on his farm two miles north of Colling.
He was born in Chippewa county, Canada, Nov 19, 1850, and when only a small child came with his parents to MI, living near Port Huron 30 years when he came to this county. April 6, 1885, (a mistake-actually married April 9, 1883) he married Miss Charlotte Barriger also of Columbia, who with their 14 children survives. They are: Mrs Ella Battenfield, Lansing; Mrs. Walter Law, Wyandotte; Mrs. Russel Hyde, Colling; Miss Effie Conant, Lansing; Miss Ida, Detroit; Ervin, Colling; Elmer, Caro; James, Owendale and Ray, Harold, Comrell, Elden, Ivan and Miss Alberna, who still remain at home. Four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth West, Port Huron; Mrs. Max Ritze, St. Clair; Mrs. Ida Ritze, Capac; Mrs. Charles Cady, Detroit and two brothers; Lafayette, Atlanta, MI, Charles, Detroit, also survive and six grandchildren.
Mr. Conant was among the early settlers of this township
and was an important factor in clearing the wilderness, building the roads, and ditches. He was a member of the Remington M.P. church and was an active member until sickness interfered.
Funeral services were held at his late home and at the Remington church conducted by Rev. Rutledge, assisted by Rev. Sweet. Burial was in Almer cemetery."
