COMMUNITY SHOCKED BY THE SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. KINNEY
Walt Kinney, 61, was stricken with a heart attack during the basketball game at Iliff, Tuesday evening and died a few minutes later. Mr. Kinney had driven the school bus to Iliff with the players and Pep Club, accompanied by Mrs. Kinney and they were watching the game, which was a very exciting contest. There was only one minute left to play and the score was tied between Ovid and Iliff, when Mr. Kinney was stricken.
The game was halted with a "timeout" period while efforts were made to revive the stricken man. The fire department at Sterling responded at once to a call for the pulmotor and gave artificial respiration to Mr. Kinney, but with no results. By the time Dr. Hilderman had reached Iliff from Ovid, he had been dead for several minutes was the belief.
The game was called and the auditorium was cleared of spectators and players almost at once after it was found he could not be revived. Mr. Austin was called from Julesburg and removed the remains to the funeral home. No date has been set as yet for the funeral, pending word from relatives.
The Kinneys came to Ovid during construction of the sugar factory in 1925 from Campbell, Nebr. Mr. Kinney was a carpenter and painter and had driven the school bus here for a number of years.
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family, Mrs. Kinney and their three children, Maurice, Martha and Roy, in this their time of sorrow.
