"CONFEDERATE VETERAN DEAD
Col. Otho S. Lee, of Belair, Served Through Civil War.

Col. Otho S. Lee who was one of the few survivors of the gallant soldiers Maryland contributed to the Confederacy, and was the oldest member of the Harford county bar, died early yesterday morning at his home in Belair. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from Emmanuel Protestant Episcopal Church in Belair.

Colonel Lee was born in Harford county in December 1840, the descendant of a family which had been prominent in that section since Colonial days, his grandfather having been Parker Hall Lee who served in the Revolution. He studied in the Harford schools and the Belair Academy, and had taken up law in the office of the late Henry W. Archer, when the Civil War started.

He went South and served from the first battle of Bull Run until the surrender of Lee's army at Appomatox. He was a member of Stuart's cavalry being in Fitzhugh Lee's command. In recognition of his meritous conduct he was promoted to be sergeant-major and attached to Johnson's Battalion, Stuart's Horse Artillery. Colonel Lee's interest in military matters lasted throughout his life. Until his final illness he followed closely the movements of the armies in Europe.

Upon his return from the South, he took up the practice of law in Harford county, and soon became one of the strong members of the bar. His interests spread to politics, and in 1876 he was a member of the House of Delegates. Governor John Lee Carroll who went into office the same year, appointed him a member of his military staff, whence came his title of colonel. He also was active in business affairs. In 1893, he organized and became the first president of the Belair Water Company, and for many years he was president of the Farmers and Merchants' National Bank, of Belair.

In 1876, (this date is an error - their first child was born in 1868), Colonel Lee married Miss Sallie Biars Griffith, a daughter of the late John L. Griffith of Harford county. She died in November 1898. In 1904, he married Miss Helen A. Bradshaw a daughter of the late Major John J. Bradshaw. Of St. Mary's county, who survives him. Colonel Lee had 11 children. Two of them, Henry Wilson Archer Lee and Robert B. Lee are dead. The nine who survive are Mrs Hannah L. Archer, Mrs John Scott Parker, of New York; Miss Helen M. Lee, Miss Elizabeth Dallam Lee, Miss Cassandra Lee, Miss Margaret B. Lee, John L. G. Lee, a member of the last House of Delegates; Otho S. Lee, Jr., and Robert Bryarly Lee."
