Born George Felton Tapp in California, Ed's mother died when he was 13 (1895), and his father remarried five years later (1900). Because of an apparent conflict between the teenager and the new stepmother, he left home. At some point he changed his name to Edwin Daniel Baldwin. Interestingly enough, when he died in 1937, his body was returned to be buried in the plot with his brother Judson Matthew Tapp. His headstone name is a combination of the two names he used.
