TRIBUTE PAID TO ESTEEMED WOMAN.
Mrs. Berta G. Gravely, wife of N. B. Gravely of Axton, whose sudden death occurred on Friday, A.M., July 5th, came as a complete surprise and shock to her many friends and relatives. She passed peacefully to her reward of heart failure.
Mrs. Gravely was the eldest child of the late Benjamin F. and Mary Jane Gravely.
She was born at Dyers Store, Henry County, Va., March 12, 1872 and received her education at Ruffner Institute and Salem College, Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was loyal member of the Methodist church, a devoted mother and kind neighbor, always considerate of others - no one in need was ever turned from her door.
She inherited her eminent and noble traits of character from a long line of illustrious and patriotic ancestors; she was a descendant of Joseph Gravely of Revolutionary fame and pioneer of the Gravely family in Henry County; he was born in England in 1744. He and his two brothers, Louis and Frank Gravely, came to America when quite young.
Mrs. Gravely leaves, besides her husband, the following children: Mrs. W. Rorer Nance, Mrs. D. F. Roach and Miss Marjorie Gravely of Axton and one son, Benjamin Franklin Gravely of Irisburg, several grandchildren nd two great grandchildren, and three sisters: Mrs. Chesley Gordon Barker of Axton, Mrs. John Thomas Erwin of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Thomas B. Gravely of Martinsville, and two brothers, Archie H. and Benjamin F. Gravely of Charleston, W. Va.
The funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, and interment was in the Gravely cemetery at the home of the late George W. Gravely, uncle of the deceased. Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Louis E. Norburn, Gordon Vivian and Carl Norburn of Danville; Messrs. Archie H. and Benjamin F. Gravely of Charleston, Wet Va., and others. The pall bearers, flower bearers and songsters were the most intimate friends fo the deceased and family.
