U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1886, studied law in Harvard Law School, never practiced law, but instead chose to devote himself to the management of his estate. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, as an assistant adjutant general on the staff of General James H. Wilson. After the war, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1900-01). In 1902, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative William H. Moody and reelected to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1917. He then rejoined the U.S. Army to serve during World War I, as a Major in command of the command of the 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry, 31st Division at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. He died of pneumonia while on active duty at age 52 and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for meritorious service.
