Percy L. Gunn, 39, War Veteran, is Taken by Death

Enlisted in U S Army in 1917; Saw Service in Four Major Battles

Percy LeRoy Gunn, son of George William and Elizabeth Jane Gunn, was born September 28, 1893, in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, and departed this life on February 17, 1933 at Lewellen, Nebraska at the age of 39 years, 4 months and 20 days.

On December 3, 1925, Mr. Gunn was united in marriage with Miss Emma Ahrens of Sedan and Edgar. To this union was born a son, Wendall LeRoy, but a very short time thereafter on July 18, 1927, Wendell's mother passed to her eternal reward.

On December 26, 1929, Mr. Gunn married Alice Ruhge of Edgar. To this union was born a daughter, Theressa Jane.

Mr. Gunn is survived by his wife, Alice, his son, Wendell LeRoy, age 5 years, his baby daughter, Theressa Jane, age 6 months and a stepson, Max Ruhge, age eight years. There also remain to mourn his departure, four brothers, Charles A., Truman M., and Kenneth M., all of Edgar, Nebraska and Richard G. Gunn of Lewellen, Nebraska, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Percy LeRoy Gunn enlisted in the U S Army on June 25, 1917 at Basin, Wyoming and in the course of time went to France where he served with the 148th Field Artillery, Battery F, taking part in four major engagements of the World War, namely the Defense of the Marne, the Marne Offensive, St. Mihiel Drive, and the Meuse Argonne Forest Campaign. He was wounded several times and also suffered from the terrible gas attacks of the enemy. After the signing of the Armistice, he served for a considerable length of time in the Army of Occupation.

Following his honorable discharge on July 7, 1919, from the service of his country, Mr. Gunn returned to his home at Edgar, Nebraska, where he remained until the year 1930. During that year he moved with his family to Lewellen, Nebraska, where he made his home until answering his last call upon earth.

The body was brought to Edgar for burial, funeral services being held Tuesday morning, first at the old home southwest of Edgar and then at 10:30 a.m. at the M. E. Church in Edgar in charge of Rev S. G. Rasmusson, pastor of the M. E. Church, and Rev B. H. Schrader, pastor of the Edgar Christian Church and chapter of Warren-Fletcher Post. No. 248, American Legion, of Edgar of which Post the deceased was a member from the time of its organization until his removal to Lewellen.

Interment was in the Edgar Cemetery and was in charge of the local American Legion Post.
