Former world featherweight and junior lightweight boxing champion. He fought 197 times between 1923 and 1940, compiling a 140-28-6 record. He scored 59 knockouts and was stopped twice in his career. Beginning his fighting career in 1919, he won the vacant world feather-weight (126 lb) championship in 1927. He became world junior light-weight (130 lb) champ in 1929. He held the crown until 1937. Making his last ring appearance on May 7, 1940, he lost a 10-round decision to Tommy Spiegel in Philadelphia. He was 35 years old at the time. Following his retirement from the ring, he became a liquor and beer salesman. He had served as a clerk in the Philadelphia Traffic Court for about 10 years before his death. He was a Mason and a member of the Veteran Boxers Association.
