Son of former U.S. senator Robert W. Upton and Martha G. (Burroughs) Upton.

He graduated from Concord High School in 1937 and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Hampshire in 1941.

In World War II, he served with the 11th and 16th Wx squadrons of the U.S. Army Air Corps in northwestern Alaska.

He was a property and casualty insurance agent for 40 years at the Eastern and Merrill Agency and its successor agency, Stewart Nelson and Co.

For more than 40 years, he was a Republican ballot inspector for Ward 7 in Concord.

He was a stream fisherman and an upland game hunter. He also enjoyed gardening.

He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle N. (Roberts) Upton.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher of Phoenix and Jeffrey of Groton, Mass.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Frederic of Exeter and George of Kansas City, Kan.
