Pearl Helen McKnight Dixon, of Galax, Va., passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at N.C. Baptist Hospital.
She was born in Baywood, Va., on April 28, 1920, the third daughter of the late Elijah Commodore McKnight and Pearl B. Hampton McKnight.
She was preceded in death, by her husband of 52 years, Glenn Woodrow Dixon; her daughter, Glenda Elizabeth Dixon; and sister, Ella McKnight Boyer. She is survived by her four children, daughters, Helen Frances Dixon, Susie Dixon Garner and son-in-law, John U. Garner, and Nancy Dixon Hickam; son Glenn S. Dixon and daughterin-law, Rhonda Dixon; her nine grandchildren, Katy Hickam Nelson and husband, Bobby, Mac Garner and wife, Emily, Jessica Hickam Roffe and husband, Peter, Elizabeth Hickam, Amy Garner, Brittany Dixon, Hannah Dixon, Woody Dixon, and Joseph Dixon; and three great-grandchildren, Avery, Grace and Aidan. She is also survived by sister, Mallie McKnight Dixon.
A lifelong resident of Grayson County, Pearl was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Galax, where for many years she taught in and supervised the nursery department. She faithfully attended and supported her church for decades. She was a charter member of the Galax Garden Club and served as an officer at the local, district and state levels. She devoted her life to her faith and her family. She loved and was loved by many.
The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home on Thursday, October 14, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Galax. Interment will follow in Felts Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or to The Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education.
