Susan Alma (Dyer) Collins was born on June 5, 1850 in Burlington, Racine County, Wisconsin, the daughter of William Dyer (1818–1866) and Diana (Downer) Dyer (1817–1864).

Raised in Wheatland, she became a school teacher, and it was likely in that capacity that, by the early 1870s she was in Iowa.

Susan was married on March 6, 1873 in Horton, Iowa to Carlos Plant Collins (1851–1925).

Carlos got into the lumber and farm implement business, and as his other business interests grew, the family moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota about 1890.

A dozen years later he was homesteading in the Yellowstone Valley area of Eastern Montana, and by about 1911 Susan and her family settled near Fairview, Richland County.

Susan was a widow and 84 years old when she passed away in Fairview on July 9, 1934. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery which was located in McKenzie County, North Dakota.
