Jane Caldwell Wheeler was born in November of 1829 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina to David Wheeler and Elizabeth C. McMakin Wheeler. She married John Whitten Collins in about 1852. They had five children who died in infancy, one at age 9, four who lived to adulthood; Edith "Edie" Collins, John Newton Collins, Hosea Dean Collins, and Mary Jane Collins.

Jane Collins died in 1916 at the old homestead. According to the 1900 Alabama census, she lived with her daughter, Edith.
