J.Lynn Cooper, 78, Tecumseh
died Monday, March 14, at an Oklahoma
City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday
at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mary Ellen
Waychoff, First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.
Cooper was born April 8, 1915, at Tecumseh, the son of J. M. "Jim" and Cordelia (Boyd) Cooper, and was reared in Tecumseh. He attended Tecumseh schools and in 1934, he graduated from Tecumseh High School and began working in the family business, Cooper Furniture and Undertaking, which was established by his parents in 1906.
He was a 1935 graduate of Williams Institute of Embalming in Kansas City, Mo., and had been an Oklahoma licensed funeral director and embalmer since 1936.
Following his parents retirement in 1946, he and his two brothers continued to operate the business. In 1957, they decided to separate the furniture store from the undertaking business and Cooper became the sole operator of the funeral home at that time.
In the mid-1960s, his son, Jim Cooper, joined the firm. After Cooper's retirement in 1984, his son became the third generation to operate the family business.
On Sept. 24, 1939, he married Thelma Jane Roberts at Bristow, Okla. He was a lifetime resident of Tecumseh, and was a member, an elder, a deacon and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh.
He was also a 50-year member of the Tecumseh Masonic Lodge #69 AF&AM; a member of the McAlester Consistory; the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 30, Tecumseh; the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce; the Tecumseh Alumni Association; the International Order of the Golden Rule; the Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association, where he had received his 50-year service pin; and the National Funeral Directors Association.
His wife died on Sept. 27, 1986. His parents; one brother, Virgil Cooper; infant brother, Jap Cooper; and granddaughter, Nancy Ann Cooper, also previously died.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda Kaye Dunlap, Edmond; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janice Cooper, Tecumseh; one brother and two sisters-in-law, H.J. and Betty Cooper, Tulare, Calif.; Mickey Cooper, Tecumseh; five grandchildren and their spouses, Leinda and Jerry Parson, Tecumseh; Shelly and Joey Harry, Saugus, Calif.; Cyndy(sic) Cooper, Edmond; J and Shannon Cooper, Tecumseh; Zac Cooper, Tecumseh; four great-grandchildren, Melissa Crowson, Tecumseh; Emily Parson, Tecumseh; Jennifer and Jessica Harry, Saugus, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
