A jury found Eric A. Vickers guilty Thursday of capital murder in the August beating death of 2-year-old Kirkland Michael Rizzuti.

The verdict came hours after he took the stand and tried unsuccessfully to pin the blame on the toddler's mother.

Vickers, 28, was arrested about a week after the boy was found dead in a Fairwood Homes house. He was the live-in boyfriend of Kirkland's mother, Samantha Kapp. Two other children also lived in the home.

The jury of three men and nine women took about two hours to make its decision. Vickers faces the death penalty or life in prison.

``I'm happy my grandson's death will not go in vain,'' said Kathleen Kapp.
