Lester left the farm in Dodge Co, MN to pick corn in Iowa as a teenager. It was there he met his bride, Rilda Marling, whom he married on Jan 15, 1930. Times were hard for a struggling young farmer in MN and IA. He tried farming in Dodge Co for a few years where they had 3 daughters and then in NE Iowa near Jesup. By 1941 they were forced to give up farming and moved to Waterloo, Iowa where they lived until 1964. One son and another daughter were added to the family while Lester worked in the hay, feed, seed and hardware business for Charles Lustoff for 22 years. Lester was also the handyman, mechanic and truck driver for the business. My most memorable moments of that era were making rural deliveries around Blackhawk Co with my Dad or Charlie to local farmers.

Jean (Elizabeth), Donna, LaVonne and Wayne all graduated from East Waterloo and then scattered to other parts of the country. Marilyn Kay graduated from Roosevelt HS in Minneapolis where Lester & Rilda lived the rest of their lives. Lester worked for Rex Hardware there until he was 80. The sign on the store said 'We sharpen anything but your wits' and Lester did many of those repairs. Family get togethers were infrequent with siblings in California, Washington D.C., Malaysia, Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee over the years, but we managed one about every ten years.
