John was the son of John and Mary Ann Swigert Butler from Pennsylvania with siblings: Emma (1846), Benjamin (1848), Allen (1851), Frank (1854), Rosetta (1859-1916)(Finch), and Adolphus Baldwin (1863). He married Lucy Hardin or Harding on 31 August 1872 in Lucas County and they had one child, John Harding Butler (1874-1957). Lucy died two years after their marriage from consumption. John married 2nd Samantha Franklin on 4 January 1876 in Lucas County; this marriage produced son Clinton A. Butler (1882-1949). John was a carpenter. John died from apoplexy at the age of 26 days prior to his sixty-fourth birthday.
