Link was the son of Benjamin Edelen Mudd & Elizabeth Lincoln. He married Elizabeth Wiley on 27 April 1848 & they had 11 children. He married Mary Ellen Gristy on 2 January 1867 & they had 1 daughter. The Memphis Reveille in Scotland Co., MO, contained the following about James Lincoln Mudd: "James Lincoln Mudd of Scotland Co. was in the city the other day. He is a 2nd cousin of Abraham Lincoln. His face, head, mouth, cheekbones, & eyes are nearly duplicates of the President's as could be. He is over 6 feet tall, has long arms & long bony hands. He has Lincoln's walk, talk, & laugh, full of jokes & fun. He likes to sit on the woodpile & tell yarns. Charles Gristy, a relative, was with Mr. Mudd who was looking after some interests in the probate court."
