Martha Ruth held a career as a teacher at Greenwoods School in Winsted. Like so many of her generation, it was believed that teachers should not marry, so she waited until after she retired to marry Fred Richards, owner of Richard's Jewelers, Main St, Winsted.
She was well known by many of the Winsted residents, especially those who were in her first grade class. She cared for her mother until her death at home.
Martha had a younger sister, Cynthia Holcomb DeMars Stevens, who was also a teacher, and spent a good deal of her life in Michigan, raising her family. Cynthia passed in 1997.
