Emley was the son of Jacob D. Sebold and Mary Williamson Sebold. His first name was also spelled Emly.

He was wed twice. He married Mary E. Roberson on Sep. 20, 1851 in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. They had at least three children: John W. in 1852, Mary about 1858 and Clara G. about 1861.

Emley married Mary E. Jorden on June 27, 1865 in Cecil Co., Maryland. They had at least five children: Ida Virginia in 1866, Elwood R. in 1868, Elizabeth F. in 1871, George W. about 1875 and Emily Alice in 1878.

He moved to Elkton, Cecil Co., Maryland between John's and Mary's births.

Emley served as a corporal in Company G of the 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on Aug. 22, 1862 and was discharged on June 20, 1865.

He was a teamster for Harlan Bros. at Leeds.
