George's correct name is George Washington Merritt. The entire family changed the last name to the most common last name of "Lee" between 1920 and 1925 when Sarah Ann Meritt married John William Sheedy. Sarah and George and been living as husband and wife for over 10 years and had two or more children. One of them being my Father, Edward Robert Merritt (Lee). My father had believed that George was his Grandfather, Sarah's father. As did my Uncle Robert, Dad's younger brother. My thought for the name change was to add some legitimate reason to Sarah's life so she was a decent woman to marry a man that was so many years younger the she. And a DC Park Policeman at that! George died in their (John and Sarah's) in 1935 from bilateral phnumonia. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery, in Suitland, MD behide his two known youngest sons, Edward Robert Merritt Lee and Robert Edward Merritt Lee. Edward and Robert records show that they had an older sister by the name of Elizabeth Merritt. It is my guess that she was a child from a different mother than Sarah Ann. As my Dad told us a story of Sarah putting two older siblings on a train to an Aunt in PA and never seeing them again. Sarah was a slice of life all right!

as stated he lies just behind his sons but in front of the upright marker. He and his sons are buried in the Historic and somber Section 20 with many former fire fighters and policemen of Washington, D.C. Just up the hill is the remains of a DCFD memorial
