Knight of the Garter, Lord Clifford, Lord Skipton, hereditary High Sheriff of Westmorland.

Son and heir to Sir Thomas de Clifford, 6th Lord Clifford and Elizabeth de Roos/Ros. Grandson of Sir Roger de Clifford and Maud de Beauchamp, Sir Thomas de Roos and Beatrice de Stafford.

Husband of Elizabeth Percy, daughter of Henry 'Hotspur' and Elizabeth de Mortimer, daughter of Sir Edmund, both descendants of King Henry III. They were married between 1403 and 1412, probably in 1404, and had two sons and two daughters:
* Sir Thomas, 8th Lord Clifford, married Joan Dacre
* Henry Clifford
* Mary, wife of Sir Philip Wentworth, the great grandparents of Jane Seymour
* Blanche, wife of Sir Robert Waterton

Sir John was summoned to Parliament 1412, took part in a tournament at Carlisle between six English and six Scottish knights, and was made a Knight of the Garter 03 May 1421. Sir John was present at the Siege of Harfleur and the Battle of Agincourt was bound into service to serve Henry V of England with three archers, and received the surrender of Cherbourg.

Sir John was slain at the Battle of Meaux in France.
