James was the son of Henry Clarkson & Elizabeth Worland. He was a Dominican priest. Father Clarkson was educated partly at St. Mary College in Marion Co., KY, & partly at St. Rose. He received his tonsure from Bishop Fenwick in Cincinnati, OH, on Sunday, 16 October 1831. Father Clarkson was ordained at St. Rose Church in May 1835 by Bishop Flaget or Bishop Guy Ignatius Chabrat. When his body was disinterred 12 years after his death, it was found to be intact & his appearance unchanged. Father Clarkson's community & the people of Memphis consider him a saint. He died of cholera.

This interment is NOT in the columbarium. It is a much older interment in the former churchyard beneath the present building. Some sources say the remains were relocated and only the memorial plaque remains.
