YORK - James J. Childs, 71, died Monday, Jan. 27 at Harbor Home ~
He was born on Jan. 31, 1931, in Livermore Falls, the son of Charles P., Sr. and Laura (McElhiney) Childs and was a graduate of York High School ~ He served as an Army Paratrooper during the Korean War ~
Mr. Childs was a pipe fitter and inspector at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1986 ~
He was a member of the York Street Baptist Church ~ James was a member of the Masons, the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars ~ He was a member of the (MOLES); Maine Obsolete Auto League ~ He had wintered in Winter Haven, Fla., for 14 years ~
He was predeceased by his father, Charles P. Childs, who died in March 1997, and by a brother, Kenneth L. Childs who died in 1935 ~
Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Nichols) Childs of York; his mother, Laura Childs of York; four sons, James, Jr. and Larisa of Franklin, Mass., Kenneth and Debbie of Charleston, S.C., Stephen of Fayetteville, N.C., and John and Shirley of Epping, N.H.; one daughter, Linda and Ray Demers of Lisbon; one step-daughter, Wanda Kezar of North Berwick; four brothers, Charles P. Jr. of Richardson, Texas, Robert of Bangor, Gerald of Barrington, N.H., and Timothy of Alaska; eight sisters, Patricia of Portsmouth, Laura of Visalia, Calif., JoAnn of Hermitage, Tenn., Barbara of Dover, N.H., Delores, Sandra and Gail Childs, all of York, and Brenda of Rochester, NH; and eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews ~
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, in the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York ~ Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Dr., York or the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York, 03909 ~ Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York ~
