Leo and his younger sister Kathleen at the McElroy's home in Beaver Township., Boone County, Iowa for a time, and attended Prairie View (McElroy) Rural school for 1905-1906 school years. In 1908 he and his sister went to stay with their older sister Mamie and her husband Edward MacNeill, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He finished school in Cambridge, after which he joined the U.S. Army during World War I. After being discharged he married Mary E O'Sullivan in 1919, in Brighton, they had one child; Leo Joseph Jr. Leo work for S.S. Pierce Company a large department store in Boston.
