Businessman. He was a railroad tycoon and noted collector of art and rare books. He was a pioneer developer of California. From his uncle Collis Potter Huntington, he learned about railroads. Huntington, his first wife Alice, and their four children relocated to California in 1892 as he was the Assistant to the President of the Southern Pacific Company. In 1902 he purchased a property of more than 500 acres that was known as the "San Marino Ranch," as well as properties in neighboring areas. He transferred his headquarters from San Francisco to Los Angeles, expanded the Pacific Electric Railway Company, organized the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, along with a number of other enterprises relative to real estate, industrial development, hotel interests. His fruit groves on the ranch made a profit. Part of the ranch became the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. The Huntington Library contains 7 million manuscript items, over 400,000 rare books, over a million photographs and prints, and an original Gutenberg Bible. The garden spreads over 120 acres. Before his death, he began to collect portraits of well-known British subjects for the Huntington Gallery and at one time, had the largest collection of British portraits in the world. He was one of the founders of the City of San Marino, which was incorporated in 1913. He purchased the old Hotel Wentworth with 20 acres, had it remodel and opened by 1914 as the Langham Huntington at Pasadena, a successful resort hotel. To the surprise of society's upper class, he divorced Alice in 1907; Alice died in 1916, he married his uncle's widow Arabella in 1913. In 1920 in his childhood home, the Huntington Memorial Library opened. A hospital in the area of the ranch was named in his honor. The mausoleum of Huntington and his wife is considered to be the model for the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. The American architect, John Russell Pope designed this mausoleum before he received the commission to design the Jefferson Memorial. He intended the mausoleum to be a Greek temple, erected on the spot Arabella chose for her gravesite. The mausoleum is made of Colorado Yule marble, and its circular peristyle has four bas-relief sculptures with literary quotes alluding to the four seasons. Surrounded by orange groves, the mausoleum was completed in 1929, two years after Henry's death and five years after Arabella died. He died during surgery. Numerous streets, schools, and other buildings in California are named in his honor.
