Obit: Edward J. Stevens 68, husband of Mrs. Alice Stevens of 215 W. Highland, decorative painter and resident of Tracy for 30 years, died at the UC hospital in San Francisco October 15 after a two year illness. Mr. Stevens was born in Fort Worth, Texas and at an early age he left the state and traveled around considerably until he took up painting and decorating in San Jose. In 1904 he married Alice Ebe of San Jose, formerly of this vicinity. 1915 saw Stevens, his wife, and two small children move to the old Ebe ranch near Tracy where Mrs. Stevens was born and raised. He then discontinued painting and he began to farm until the irrigation came in when the family moved to Tracy where he took up painting again. He was an artist at painting and loved his profession and also the people he painted for. Stevens continued painting until the last few years his health began to fail him. Several attempts were made to restore him to his former health but failed. Among his survivors are his wife and sons, Cpl. Alden Stevens overseas; and Waldo Stevens of Tracy; a daughter, Mrs. Viola Batten of Tracy; brothers Otto Stevens of Phoenix, Arizona; Eugene Stevens, Carlsbad, New Mexico; Dr. Joseph Stevens, Washington, D.C.; sisters Mrs. Grace Jones, Yoakum, Texas and Mrs. Carrie Peake, Oklahoma City, Okla. Mr. Stevens was at one time a member on the local board of directors of the American Trust Bank.
Funeral services for Mr. Stevens will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from DeMark Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Tracy cemetery. Pallbearers will be William Larsen, Henry Fisk, George Phares, Jacob Thoming, E.W. Jenkins and Jack Clevenger.
