He was transferred to the US Army Infantry in preparation for the D-Day invasion. He was in the second wave of the attack on Omaha Beach.
He fought in and survived the Battle of the Bulge as a S. Sgt. where he earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was part of the occupation of Germany, then returned to the United States to train recruits at Fort Bragg.
He received an Honorable Discharge, and returned to Burlington, NC where he met and later married, Norma Lee Rimmer in 1948, and was hired by Western Electric where he worked for nearly 40 years before retiring.
He was the father of five children, one who died in infancy and four who survive.
