Rose Berka was born November 16, 1915 to Mike and Kathrina Marek Berka. She passed from this life the evening of August 9, 2008 at the District Hospital #1 at Caldwell, Kansas after an illness of many years.
Rose was born 3 miles north of Caldwell, Kansas on the farm owned by John and Mike Berka. When Rose was three, the Mike Berka family moved to a farm near Battlecreek, Nebraska. Her brother, James Berka, was born on this farm. Rose attended school for two and ½ years before moving back to Kansas. While going to school in Nebraska, Rose made two friends that she corresponded with the rest of their lives.
The Mike Berka family purchased a farm one mile west of Corbin, Kansas. She finished her education at the Corbin school. Rose rode a pony or walked to school in Corbin over a mile away from home. Rose's parents had each come from Czechoslovakia and so the Czech language was spoken at home. Rose had to learn English at school. Rose, being the oldest child, worked outdoors with her father. The young people of Czech descent met friends at the dances at the ZCBJ or Sokol Halls. At the dances she met Edward Jindra from 8 miles northwest of Renfrow, Oklahoma. On January 2, 1934 Edward and Rose were united in marriage at the Sumner County Courthouse in Wellington, Kansas.
Rose and Edward lived on the farm of Frank and Anna Jindra, Edward's parents. To this union three children were born, Helen, Laddie, and James. In 1942 the family moved 12 miles north of Caldwell. Rose needed to be closer to her parents as her mother's health was failing.
In 1951 the family moved to a farm 4 miles west of the Chicaskia River on Highway 44. They built a new home and many new buildings on the farm. Rose was a wonderful gardener and canned her produce. She had large flocks of chickens and milked cows to feed her family and sell the extra produce in order to buy the items that she did not raise.
Rose and Edward moved into Caldwell when their youngest son, Jim, married and moved on the farm. Rose and Edward had 46 years of marriage before he passed away October 12, 1980. Rose met Herb Seibel, rural Wakita, Oklahoma, and they were married May 23, 1989 in Medford, Oklahoma. Herb passed away November 2, 1993.
Rose loved her family, gardening, shopping, and traveling. Jim and Linda took his mother on several trips with the family. After that Rose had the travel bug and she took many bus tours. Thanksgiving was always a Jindra tradition and the family enjoyed Rose's homemade noodles, apple strudel and kolache, all Czech favorites. Rose always had a sweet disposition and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She enjoyed good health until the loss of her memory made living very difficult. Twelve and a half years ago Rose had to leave her home. She resided at the Goodrich Home in Caldwell until 2002 when she moved to the Sumner County District #1 Hospital where she lived until her death.
Rose was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Caldwell and had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Edward Jindra and Herb Seibel, her son, Laddie Jindra, a great grandson, Cory James Reimer, and her brother, James Berka.
Rose is survived by her children, Helen and Tom Baker, Jim and Linda Jindra, all of Caldwell, a daughter-in-law, Laurian and Terry Hunt of Lexington, Kentucky, and a sister-in-law, Nellie Berka, of Enid, Oklahoma. Ten grandchildren enjoyed Rose. They are Rick, Terry, and Marty Baker and Sherry Bawl; Mark, Susan, and John Jindra; Jeanette Shelton, Kristi Reimer, and Lori Fisher. Her legacy includes three step-grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.
Her family, many relatives, and friends will miss visiting with Rose.
Funeral services for Rose will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel, Caldwell, Kansas. Rev. Jan McDaniel will officiate.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008 and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008.
