PFC Robert E. Askam, 19, son of Mrs. Eva A. Powell, wife of Robert Powell, 200 Miami street. was killed in action seven miles north of Dong Ha, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, Tuesday, June 17, according to word received by his mother yesterday from Marine Capt. George A. Ravan, Lima.
PFC Askam received multiple fragment wounds of the body and head from an enemy grenade while on patrol.
A native of Tiffin and a 1968 graduate of Columbian high school, PFC Askam trained at Parris Island and Camp Le Jeune, and was sent to Vietnam shortly before last Christmas. He had been employed by Frosted Foods and by Tiffin Enterprise before entering the Marine Corps. He was born here May 5, 1950.
Surviving are his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Powell, brothers and sisters, Daniel, of Lebanon, Mo.; Mrs. Joseph (Marlene) Zender, Columbus; Steve, Linda, Jeanne, and Kenneth Askam, all at home; half-sisters and a half-brother. Christine, Diane, Theresa, and Timothy Powell, all at home; and grandmothers, Mrs. Clare Vera, Bascom, and Mrs. Gladys Askam, Tiffin.
The body is to be brought to the Pahl-Nemeth funeral home here, and arrangements for services will be made after time of arrival has been learned. (Tiffin Advertiser Tribune, June 23, 1969)
