James Edward Brady was born 5/10/1837 in Norfolk, Virginia. His occupation was barber. In 5/12/1861 he enlisted in 6th Virginia Infantry as a Corporal and was placed in company "D". He had been a member of the Virginia Militia. Most of 1862 and 1863 he was in and out of the hospital. August 26, 1862 he went AWOL, returned 1/1/1863 reduced to Private. October 27, 1864 he became a POW at Burgess Mill battle. April 7, 1864 he requested to take the oath. He sent a letter to his grandmother, Lovy Perkins, to send him expense money to get home, he never received answer. He died October 20, 1888 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
