A Service of Remembrance for Harold Eugene Ballew, 83, Baldwin City, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City.
Mr. Ballew died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Private family inurnment will be at a later date at the Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City.
He was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Glasgow, Mo., the son of Willie Weldon and Jewell Angelia (Grady) Ballew. He attended area schools.
Mr. Ballew served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged July 13, 1946, as a seaman first class.
He was a delivery driver for Manor Bakery. While in Baldwin he also worked for Meyers Dairy in Lawrence. He and his wife owned and operated Ballew's Service and Grocery from 1965 to 1979. He retired in 1993, from the United States Post Office, as a rural mail carrier.
Mr. Ballew was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a former board member. He served on the city council from 1958 to 1960. He was a past commander and active member of the American Legion Post 228. He also belonged to the Rural Mail Carriers Association.
He married Phyllis Elaine Bruun on Dec. 9, 1949, in Fayette, Mo. She died Dec. 31, 2008.
Survivors include a daughter, Constance Johnson, Stanwood, Wash.; a son, Steven Ballew, Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Barbara Shubert, Butler, Mo.; two brothers, Paul Ballew, Fayette, Mo., and William W. Ballew of Seattle, Wash.; and a grandchild.
