Tradegy in real life.--The wife of a gentleman of Palmyra, Mo., recently eloped with a Doctor Peake,
Taking with her one of her children, a girl about sixteen months old. The husband pursued the guilty parties to Columbia, Arkansas (this is error, it was Miss.), discovered the house in which they boarded, and without ceremony entered their room. on entering he immediatelly secured his child, and on an attempt of Dr. Peake to inter___, he drew a pistol and directing it toward Dr. Peake, threatened him with instant death if he advanced. The doctor's interference being thus arrested, the unhappy man bore his child off without further hindrance. A few minutes afterwards he received a message from his wife praying an interview, which he granted on condition that it should take place in the presence of witnesses. Accordingly he repaired with several of the citizens of the town to her apartment, where he was speedily interrupted by the approach of Dr. Peake, armed with a pistol. He immediately stepped to the door and drawing his pistol, fired and wounded Dr. P., who, however continued to advance upon him with angry and menacing gestures. The husband then drew a bowie knife, and rushing on Dr. P. before the latter could fire his pistol, plunged it into his heart. The doctor fell and immediately expired, his adversary exclaiming "there dies a villian, once my dearest friend, who first destroyed my happiness and deserved death, but who has rushed on his own destruction." The miserable wife has been provided for by her husband, but remains at Columbia, abandoned by him and his daughter, and a wretched outcast from all virtuous society.

*NOTE: It was said in another story of this event that the husband did take SARAH the "miserable wife" back. =====================================================
This story ran in almost every newspaper in the country for about 2 years, same story. The AP was very very slow back then, or they didn't have anything else to print, so lets keep telling this horrible event and disparage the Peake name as much as possible, this was a horrible thing to have happened to Dr. Peakes wife and children and a hard matter to overcome in the community, but the Media/Press don't care, notice how they spared the wife of Mr. Wilcox, lets not disparage the "miserable wife's name"/sarcasm. We do not know where they buried him. Perhaps they donated the body to science.
Maybe left the body in Columbus and never claimed it, who knows. Is wife is buried between two of her children, ironic?
Oh, BTW the name of the man who killed Dr. Peake was Mr. Wilcox of Palmyra, figure it out.

NOTE: THIS ENTIRE BIO WAS COPIED EXACTLY AS YOU READ IT HERE AND PUT INTO ANCESTRY.COM by someone. It has taken me almost 30 years to find all this info on this Peake line, searching Deeds/Wills,Books, etc. traveling to where they lived, in fact almost all this Peake line info was used in Ancestry.com. I do not mind it being shared by the family, JUST GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE, I always source my information so should you. I put it all into Find A Grave because it is FREE and I care to share, but some thinks ANCESTRY is entitled to this info to CHARGE others to use? SHAME.

I subscribed/paid for the old newspaper website and searched out these news stories as it was that important for me to know what happened.
ALSO: one item they copied into Ancestry.com is incorrect. Also copied into My Heritage Tree and is incorrect, very ironic but very typical of Ancestry info.

ALSO: I know the name of the "Miserable WIFE". Ancestry or Heritage Tree does not, but I bet they will copy this anyway as if they did know.

What this Dr. Wm. Peake did was a shame to his family and perhaps the reason he was never remembered again by his family, as my dad never knew past his grandfather Dr. John H. Peake. It has been said that Wm. did other things in Mo., but THERE was another William Peake in that area, so proof before speaking please.

I believe that Dr. Wm. O. Peake & his brother were simply spoiled and their dad Spared the Rod, yes they were wealthy. However, the family rose above it all and many of their descendants did and have done many great things and we would not be here without him, don't pass his stigma on to others.

IF YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THIS FAMILY AND HAVE INFO OR PICTURES I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THE CONNECTION. SOMEWHERE THERE HAS GOT TO BE A PICTURE OF HIM. I WILL GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR ANY INFO YOU PROVIDE WHICH I DO NOT ALREADY HAVE.
His cousins Cornelia Peake McDonald wrote in her diary that Dr. Wm. Peake was the handsomest man she had ever known.

Searching for other children:
EDWARD T. PEAKE, also went to Oregon with siblings
