ABBEVILLE. . .James Robert Vann, a resident of Abbeville, died Monday morning, November 1, 2010, at his home. He was 93.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Thursday, November 4, 2010, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Teddy Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P. M. Wednesday at the mortuary in Abbeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville Fire and Rescue, 201 Bradley Street, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or Wiregrass Hospice, Inc., P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL. 36302 or to the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL. 36310.

Mr. Vann was a native of the Brown's Crossroads community in Henry County, son of the late Dr. James Robert Vann, Sr. and Edna Wheeler Vann. He moved with his family as a child to Abbeville where he lived all his lifetime. Mr. Vann attended Auburn University on a football scholarship. A member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, he formerly served as a member of the Henry County Commission. An avid quail hunter, Mr. Vann was active in promoting sports programs and was instrumental in founding Little League Baseball in Abbeville. He retired as a heavy equipment salesman from Jeffcoat Equipment in Dothan. In earlier years, Mr. Vann was engaged in farming. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ophelia Faulk Vann and a sister, Martha Nell Vann Rogers.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Ann Jackson and husband, Bill, Cibolo, TX; Fay Daugherty and husband, Gerald, Abbeville; Mary Perkins and husband, Gary, Auburn; a son, Jimmy Vann and wife, Diane, Macon, GA; five grandchildren, Amy Kraus, Laurie Daugherty, Vann Daugherty and wife, Angie, Phil Perkins and wife, Jada, Russell Perkins and wife, Deanna; ten great-grandchildren, Collin, Zac and Grace Perkins, Camille and Lauren Kraus, Maggie and Natalie Perkins, Ava and Eric Daugherty, Will Daugherty; special caregivers, Bettye Graham, Cynthia Oates, Pat Crews and Bobbie Walker; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Vann Daugherty, Phil Perkins, Russell Perkins, Coy Money, Wright Simmons, Bill Anthony, Ronnie Roland, Russell Wood. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be SuAnne Carmouche, Thomas Kennedy, Robert Armstrong, Doug Messick, Kenneth Blalock, Homer Kennedy, George Murphyand Kenneth Ethridge.
