Susannah was the daughter of Adam Shafer and Elisabeth Swartwout. She married Malachai J. Shoemaker on Dec. 30, 1808 in Kingston, Luzerne Co., PA. He was the son of William Shoemaker and Susanna Richardson. To this union eleven children were born; Susan, Payne Pettibone, Catherine, Malachai (d. as a toddler), William, Malachai Treat, Martha Ann, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Sarah Lucinda, and Abram F.
After the death of Malachai, Susannah married Gilbert Ayers in PA.
The fourth annual Shoemaker family reunion was held in 1899 in honor of the family of Malachai and Susannah Shoemaker.
Susannah was blind in her old age. She is buried with several children and various other family members.
