Herbert Gross, 88, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
Mr. Gross was born November 18, 1921, in New York City and was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
He was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1944, where he met his wife, Harriet, of 53 years.
He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Humanities from Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif.
Herbert served in the United States Army Artillery in the European Theater during World War II.
Mr. Gross was associated with William Abramson in the McGhee-Marshall & Guardian Life Insurance Agency. They formed Abramson-Gross Real Estate Company, which helped develop St. Joseph's first shopping center, East Hills.
He joined Stevens-Stetson Hat Manufacturing Company and served as Chief Financial Officer from 1971 until 1984.
Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet (Rosenthal) Gross on October 7, 2000; his parents, Milt and Anne (Abramson) Gross of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two brothers, Stephen and Jerrold Gross.
He was a member of Temple Adath Joseph, St. Joseph Country Club, Benton Club, Charity-Zeredatha Lodge No. 189, A.F. & A.M., Thirty Second Degree Scottish Rite Mason, was a member of Molia Shrine, served on the Missouri State Board on Mental Health and was a former member of Commerce Bank Board of Directors.
Survivors include two daughters: Lori G. Heyle (Kirk), Springfield, Mo.; and Mindy G. Stenger (John), Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Lindsey Heyle, Lauren Heyle, Whitney Stenger, and Hayley Stenger; sister-in-law, Claude Gross; cousins; a host of friends; and a special friend, Lynne Dickens.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment: Shaare Sholem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the American Heart Association.
