Memorial services for Mr. Carawan, age 69, of Scranton, were held at Eunice Chapel Church of Christ with Michael Swindell and Lemmie Davenport officiating. (Bryan Funeral Service). His death occurred at Pungo District Hospital after an eight-month illness with cancer.

A musician for over 60 years, he was one of a set of brothers who were the third generation of musicians in the Carawan family. In 1949, he performed for the Wesley Parker Tent Show. In 1952, he helped organize the Carawan Brothers Tent Show, which performed in rural towns throughout Eastern North Carolina. Then in 1954, he joined Bob and Mae Noell's Traveling Animal Tent Show, "Noell's Ark Gorilla Show." During these recent years, he had performed for the Pocosin Arts, the Scuppernong Riverfest and with Molasses Creek and other musicians of the Outer Banks music scene at the Ocrafolk Music Festival.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1958.

In 2003, he retired from Pungo Machine in Pantego and had also been employed with Allied Towing and was an auto body repairman.

A member of the Scranton Eunice Chapel Church of Christ, he was preceded in death by his parents, Maxwell Mannen Carawan and Sarah Teressa Barnett Spencer Carawan; his 2 brothers, John A. and Denny Max Carawan; and his step-mother, Verna Gibbs Carawan.

Mr. Carawan is survived by his wife, Joyce O'Neal Carawan, whom he married on May 1,1986; sons, Joshua L. and Jacob M. Carawan; a daughter, Sarah C. Stotesberry; 1 step-son, James R. Heck; 2 step-daughters, Tracy Heck and Kerry Luft, all by his 2nd wife, Carol Inez (Wakely) Carawan, (1938-2010); 3 step-sons, Kenneth M., Kevin M. and Stephen R. Green; a step-daughter, Lisa A. Booth, all by his present wife; 4 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren; 7 brothers, Leland W., Earl L., Seth D. "Donny", Danny M. and Davy J. Carawan; Chester R. and Lester A. Combs; and 1 sister, Deborah C. Boomer.
