STANLEY - David Ray "Sonkie" Long, 86, died Nov. 5, 2010, at Brian Center in Lincolnton.
He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Roy and Zettie Whitley Long; was preceded in death by his wife Betty Handsel Long, a daughter Kathy Rivelle; four brothers, Cull Long, Dan Long, John "Puff" Long, and Lloyd "Boots" Long, and a sister Alva Hastings.
He was a US Army veteran of World War II; having been captured and held as a prisoner of war by the German Army for 13 months; was a retired welder with Gaston County Dye Machine Company in Stanley with 30 years of service, was a member of the American Legion Rhyne-Cannon Post #266 in Stanley, and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Stanley.
Survivors include two daughters Jean Jenkins and husband Joe of Alexis, Marcia Long and fiancée Billy Wright of Gastonia; two grandchildren Todd Jenkins and wife April, Heath Jenkins; and five great-grandchildren T.J. and Dylan Jenkins, Nolan Wright, Ashley and Josh Usery
Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Billy Shaw will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Stanley.
Interment with full military honors conducted by the Gaston County World War II Last Man Club will follow in Hill-crest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Jean and Joe Jenkins, 145 Still Meadow Lane, Alexis.
The family would like to thank the staff of Woodlawn Haven Assisted Living in Mount Holly for their care and con-cern for the last 3 years, as well as the staff of Brian Center in Lincolnton.
