Barbara A. McCarthy, 74, Defiance, passed away Thursday, November 4, 2010, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

She was born in Piqua, Ohio, on February 1, 1936, the daughter of the late Ralph and Helen (Wallace) Brokaw. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Defiance, the Christian Mothers and Altar Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Barb married Phillip McCarthy on June 25, 1955, and he died Feb. 1, 1988. She had worked at Defiance City Schools and Foodtown.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen McCarthy of Whitehouse and Patricia Froelich (Shawn Weible) of Edgerton, Ohio; two sons, Michael (Karen) McCarthy of Napoleon, and James (Stacey) McCarthy of Colorado. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rose "Beth" Held; her parents; husband; and special friend, Jim Burke.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 8, with Father Todd Dominique officiating. Friends are invited to call Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance. A DAR service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens.
