Leonard R. Hier

Ticonderoga - Leonard R. Hier, 73, of The Portage, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Moses-Ludington Hospital of Ticonderoga.

He was born in Ticonderoga, April 5, 1929, the son of the late Thurman and Eva (Strong) Hier.

Mr. Hier served in the New York State Army National Guard.

He was a lifelong Ticonderoga resident. He was employed by the International Paper Co. of Ticonderoga from 1956 until his retirement in 1990 and was a member of the Company's Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Hier took special pride in gardening and caring for his lawn.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Amos Hier and William Hier; and by two sisters, Eva Kozma and Ellen Gilleo.

Survivors include his wife, Joan (McCarthy) Hier; one daughter, Claire Hier Brown of Hampton, N.H.; one grandson, William Brown, Spec 4 U.S. Army, serving in Afghanistan; and one granddaughter, Katherine Brown of Hampton, N.H. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A funeral service will follow on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Mr. Elliot A. Shaw will officiate. Interment will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga.
