Born in Jasczerrek, Kr. Schwetz, West Prussia. Nephew of Christian Ernst Friedrich Benz of this county who paid his fare in 1874. Joseph Ernst was a theerschmaler in Danzig working with tar in the shipping industry. He died in 1881 when a team of horses ran away with a hayrack.
